Masahiro wanders around outside after his coming-of-age ceremony.
Mokkun: Having your coming-of-age ceremony held offscreen must be a real blow for a main character like you, right, Masahiro?
Masahiro: I’m already thirteen- I feel like I’ve been an adult for many years already.
Masahiro’s father Yoshimasa appears.
Yoshimasa: Son, we have an obligation to make this series more interesting than just you wandering around all the time. To that end, you must accompany me to Fujiwara no Michinaga’s house tomorrow.
Mokkun: Wow, just because you’re the main character, everyone wants to meet you.
Masahiro: I wish it was because I’m the main character, but I think it has more to do with the fact that I’m Seimei’s grandson.
Mokkun: Oh, I should have known- you are pretty useless, after all.
The next day, Yoshimasa, Masahiro and Mokkun walk to Fujiwara no Michinaga’s house.
Mokkun: Listen, Masahiro, this guy is very influential and powerful, so at least try to pretend that you aren’t completely useless.
Masahiro: Shut up already! ….Oops.
Yoshimasa: Please excuse my son; in a set up designed to create any number of slightly amusing moments, he has an ayakashi mascot which is invisible to most people.
Michinaga: Ah, I see…or rather I do not see anything but I shall nonetheless go along with you and hope I’m not making a fool of myself. Anyway, Masahiro, you may be insignificant, untrained and low-ranking, but since you are the main character, I am counting on you.
Yoshimasa: Okay, Masahiro, you can run along now- Michinaga and I want to talk about adult things.
Masahiro and Mokkun go outside.
Masahiro: Wow, this place is really big. I might get lost.
Mokkun: Luckily, you have me along, and I know everything. Pretty impressive, eh?
Masahiro: Mokkun, why are you still with me? I can see demons and spirits now, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Mokkun: Who are you trying to kid? A Level One hero such as yourself would be killed in one hit if I wasn’t around to protect you. Besides, I won’t get any screen time if I leave you.
Mokkun suddenly senses something and wanders away. Masahiro follows.
Masahiro: What is it, Mokkun- an evil spirit?
Mokkun: No, just plot foreshadowing. Anyway, if you don’t need me, why don’t you try to figure it out for yourself?
Masahiro: You know I haven’t earned enough AP to learn the skills I need…
The female lead, Michinaga’s daughter Akiko, appears.
Mokkun: It’s the girl from the OP!
Akiko: I thought I’d better introduce myself to the viewers while I had the chance. You’re Abe no Seimei’s grandson, aren’t you?
Masahiro: I’m not just his grandson! I’m the main character.
Masahiro and Mokkun leave.
Mokkun: Everyone’s always talking about Seimei; I guess that’s because he’s such an accomplished and superior man- yes a true onmyouji.
Masahiro: Shut up! I may be Level One now, but if the series continues for long enough I can gain enough EXP to surpass him.
Mokkun: You don’t hear of many 3000 episode series, so I think you’re out of luck.
Masahiro throws Mokkun off his shoulder and walks on ahead. They meet Yukinari, the man who presided over the coming-of-age ceremony.
Yukinari: For some reason, although you have parents and a grandfather, I shall be your guardian once you start training at the Onmyou dorms.
Mokkun: Looks like this guy can’t see me. Let’s see how much trouble I can cause.
Mokkun starts jumping around on Yukinari’s shoulder.
Masahiro: Mokku-, uh, I mean, there’s absolutely nothing wrong, and definitely no invisible ayakashi around here.
Yukinari: Ah, I see. Here, let me adjust your hat- they’re awkward at first, but you’ll be fine once you learn to get over your embarrassment at wearing such stupid headwear.
Yukinari leaves.
Later, Masahiro is carrying scrolls around at the Omyou dorms.
Masahiro: Is this really fitting work for a main character? Those other generics can’t even see them.
Masahiro takes the scrolls to the library.
Masahiro: Hmm, while I’m here I may as well read “My First Book of Spells”.
Mokkun: There’s no time for that now. I sense an evil aura.
Masahiro and Mokkun look outside, only to see a fire at the Imperial Palace.
Mokkun: Masahiro, this isn’t just any fire- it’s related to a monster-of-the-week!
Masahiro: Magical Zoom In!
Masahiro uses his powers to see what is going.
Masahiro: I see a fire that may be related to a monster-of-the-week- let’s go!
Masahiro and Mokkun rush out and force their way into Michinaga’s mansion, where the evil seems to be emanating from.
Masahiro: Out of my way, I’m the main character!
Akiko starts to come outside just as an evil black smoke demon emerges.
Masahiro: Just watch and marvel at my main character powers! Star Shield! Red Light Rain!
Masahiro defends himself whilst attacking the demon, but does little damage.
Mokkun: Here, let an expert handle it. Flame Swipe!
Mokkun attacks several times.
Mokkun: There you go, Masahiro, I’ve softened him up for you! Make the finishing blow and gain some more EXP!
Masahiro: Light Daggers!
Masahiro finishes off the monster and reaches Level Two.
Akiko: What was that?
Masahiro: Oh, just a monster-of-the-week.
Yukinari and Michinaga appear.
Michinaga: Akiko, what happened? Are you all right?
Akiko: Don’t worry about me, Father, I had the main character with me.
Later, Masahiro and Mokkun return home. A generic woman hands Masahiro a gift from Akiko.
Mokkun: Looks like you have a female admirer- you’d better not let her find out you’re only Level Two.
Masahiro: You never stop going on about that, do you?
