Sunday News Bites: January 13th

Hello and welcome to the first Sunday News Bites of 2008! After its long hiatus, this was a feature I was reluctant to revive- unlike the Tuesday Rumble and Weekly Round-Up, it just didn’t seem as much of a part of the whole Azure Flame experience, and trying to get one of these ready every Sunday may have contributed to my lack of enthusiasm of blogging. Nonetheless, I want to give it one more chance to prove itself, and also hear from you, the readers- does Sunday News Bites press your buttons?

Anyway, joining us in the newsroom this week is the tiny artist Issun, as seen in Okami.

Take your PiQ
ADV’s Newtype was reported to have ceased publication this week, but just as read cried into their peach juice about the loss of its shininess, it was announced that the magazine would be replaced with a new one entitled PiQ Continue reading →

Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny

Felt and Viese Blanchimont are orphans and childhood friends living on the airborne continent of Eden. Whilst Viese studies to become an alchemist, Felt is more concerned with honing his swordsmanship- a seemingly pointless endeavour given that Eden is a peaceful place completely devoid of monsters. Nonetheless, it turns out that Felt’s skills are just what is needed when a mysterious disaster causes part of Eden to disappear, for, armed with the legendary sword known as the Azure Azoth, it is he who must travel to the world of Belkhyde in the hopes of finding the key to saving Eden. But he won’t have any chance in this strange new world without Viese backing him up at home, using her alchemic skills and the power of the Share Ring to supply Felt with vital Mana Items. Tuesday Rumble: January 8th

chibi-dii-blog.pngExtracts from the book of HARD GAY: Koutetsu Sangokushi

Part II: Shu

Liu Bei: A youthful lover, effeminate to the point that no one really knows his (or her) true gender. Despite his lack of experience, his uncertain sexuality should please those who like to experiment.

Zhuge Liang: God’s own son, a master in the bedroom. Few have seen him “tackle out”, and it will take someone very special to get the full HARD GAY treatment from him.

Guan Yu: A rough and direct lover, consumed by the Lord’s Sphere to the extent of becoming violent in the bedroom.

Zhang Fei: Similat to Guan Yu, only even more lacking in finesse. Continue reading →

Tekkonkinkreet

Despite its name, Treasure Town is infamous not for being a place you would actually want to visit, but for being a hotbed of gang wars and yakuza activity. In amongst all this chaos, two young boys- canny streetwise Black and childish idiot savant White- fight both to survive and to protect their home turf from outsiders and the changes they bring.

Disgaea: you played the game, endured the anime- now try the manga

As a game, Disgaea and its sequel were great fun, but the less said about that awful anime adaptation, the better. With that in mind, I didn’t have a great deal of interest in the series’ manga incarnation, but given that my brother did, I decided not to pass up the opportunity to do a bit of free reading of his books.

So far, three Disgaea manga volumes have been released in English- a one-off for the original Disgaea game, and two volumes of the ongoing Disgaea 2 series. Each series is handled by a different mangaka, but both have that somewhat inferior “cash-in adaptation done by an inexperienced artist” feel. Nonetheless, for real fans of the series, there may be some worth in them. Continue reading →

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

When a strange incident leaves 17-year-old Makoto Konno with the ability to ‘leap’ backwards through time, she does exactly what most people would do- uses her ability for her own personal gain. Nonetheless, as fun as it is to avoid mishaps, pick up extra pocket money and improve her grades, it gradually becomes clear that messing around with time has its consequences, and that trying to change one thing for the better can make something else far worse.

Final Thoughts: Oh! Edo Rocket

Tamaya Seikichi is a fireworks maker who dreams of making fireworks that the world has never seen- the only problem is that he lives in 1840s Edo, where such luxuries have been banned. Nonetheless, Seikichi is determined to pursue his dream, and he is only given more reason to persevere when a mysterious girl named Sora shows up and asks him to make a rocket that can reach the moon. Inspired by this unusual request, Seikichi and his friends in the Furai Row-House block band together to defy not only the edicts of the government, but history itself.
